This week I continued my research and looked more into one fascinating mental disorder called schizophrenia. I looked into my family records this week and discovered a lot about myself and my family's mental healthy one that reached out to me was this disorder. I had an overall understanding of this disorder. Still, as I kept looking into it, I had no idea that I would have found many interesting and knowledgeable facts about the condition. Schizophrenia is defined as "a long-term mental disorder of a type involving a breakdown in the relation between thought, emotion, and behavior, leading to faulty perception, inappropriate actions and feelings, withdrawal from reality and personal relationships into fantasy and delusion, and a sense of mental fragmentation" (Rosepetals1984 page one). After researching more into it, I found out that there are many different types of mental illness. Five that stood out to me. The first type of schizophrenia is paranoid schizophrenia, "Paranoid schizophrenia is the kind of schizophrenia that is usually exaggerated in movies and by the media. It is the most common form of schizophrenia and is usually characterized by positive schizophrenia symptoms like delusions and hallucinations" (Banyantreatmentcenters page 1). Next would be catatonic schizophrenia, which is defined as "...[a] type of schizophrenia is unique in that it involves physical movement. Catatonia can be its disorder, but people with catatonic schizophrenia often have negative schizophrenia symptoms and are not very responsive. They may not react to stimuli, stay in strange body positions, make odd movements, or even have rigid limbs that will stay in the position they are moved to" (Banyantreatmentcenters page 1). The third type is called hebephrenic or disorganized schizophrenia, "Hebephrenic schizophrenia is also called disorganized schizophrenia because these people usually have disorganized speech and behavior. They may also have inappropriate emotional responses or lack of any emotional response" (Banyantreatmentcenters, page 1). Next would be Residual schizophrenia, "Residual schizophrenia is used when people have a history of positive schizophrenia symptoms but now only have lingering negative symptoms or none at all. These lingering symptoms may include poor attention, some mental disorganization, and emotional withdrawal" (Banyantreatmentcenters page 1). Lastly, would be undifferentiated schizophrenia or known as "... the classification given to people who may not fit into any of these other classifications of schizophrenia because they are showing symptoms for more than one kind. These people may exhibit both positive and negative symptoms. While there are different schizophrenia types, these disorders fall on a spectrum and should be treated. Schizophrenia treatment will differ not only based on the type of schizophrenia, but also the individual. Typically, treatment will include a combination of medicine and psychotherapy" (Banyantreatmentcenters, page 1). Even though all are under the schizophrenia category, each disorder is very different in its way but can all still be tied back. This article and topic have been my favorite to understand what it is like to live every day with it and how it can differ from each person. Although I will keep looking deeper into this prevalent disorder, this was a good start of just the comprehensive background information. I cannot wait to keep gaining knowledge of this disorder.
