This week, I had my first interview with Paul D. Merys, a therapist in Frisco; and is a very busy person but could allow me to give me a call and interview him. It went very well, and I even gained more information and knowledge about my field and even fields around my field. Of course, I hope to study psychiatry, and when Paul broke it down, I started to understand that psychiatry and LPC are different. In my mind, you could be both. However, really with both fields regions, many years of schooling one more than the other. However, three branches all work together to help the client but are all different simultaneously. First, a person would be diagnosed to take a test and find out what they might have then. However, that person feels they would either pick between going to an LPC to talk out their emotions and trying to fix their mental state with communication or going to psychiatry and trying to fix it with medication or lastly, a person could go to both. As Paul said, “psychiatry is like putting a band-aid over a bullet hole” yes, it can stop the bleeding for a little bit, but under the band-aid, it is still bleeding and is getting held in by the band-aid. Therefore, medicine can only help to a point you have to let out your emotions one way or another, so you are not holding things in and making your mental state worse. Thanks to Paul for making me wonder which one I want to study, and that is psychiatry. He gave me some names and organizations and even said that I would adequately benefit from their mentorship even better because I could get more out of it. Therefore, this week went very well. I do have much work to do, such as reaching out to more psychiatrists and still pinpointing a mentor, but as of right now, I believe I am on the right track for greatness!
