Over the school year so far, I have been looking into a couple of different careers. I was unsure of which two professions. I wanted to look deeper into it throughout the rest of the year. After a change of heart, I finally decided I wanted to look further into psychology. I have learned so far just within psychology; there are so many different areas of study. With me being more informed, I have had a hard time choosing which I am most interested in and want to research more. Therefore, I had to do some more research on the different areas of psychology. I believe that I have finally found one, which is psychiatry. Meaning, I have to start at the very beginning and look more into this field. Although I know little about psychiatry, the little information I do know has made me beyond interested, making me want to have this my main study over the ISM year. As the dictionary states, psychology is “the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behavior in a given context.” I find it interesting that we can understand how the brain works and why we act and think the way we do. As I was researching the different fields, I was thinking about how I feel I can help the most, and psychiatry instantly came to mind. Psychiatry is most known as “the study and treatment of mental illness, emotional disturbance, and abnormal behavior.” From that point, I felt that if not only I can learn how the brain functions and would be able to understand and could even help people treat their mental illness; therefore, it is the right area to keep investing my time. Ever since I was little, I wanted to help others, and I have struggled with mental illnesses. I always thought since I’ve dealt with it myself and have found ways to cope with it myself, maybe I can help others. Within the past couple of weeks, I have been exploring a lot about the different ways to help a person cope and what each mental illness is. In a way, I feel as if everyone has gone through or even has suffered from a mental illness. And that is not a bad thing, in my opinion, if anything, I find it incredibly fascinating that our brains can understand trauma and act upon it. The most exciting fact is that each person sees and handles it differently. Even though we are all different, the warning signs are often expected, but even with that being said, it can differ with each person as well.
